Welcome to Shirley: A Memoir from an Atomic Town by Kelly McMasters - Book Review

"With active nuclear reactors on site up from the 50's and up to 2000 and a complete lack of proper community education and outreach until very recently, it is not a surprise that the laboratory dedicates a whole section of its website to contradicting and refuting McMasters book, and their the lab's role in the increased number of cancer cases in the communities around their laboratory site. They're still not really reaching out. For example, this is the best “apology” the book can get out of them:"
The Laboratory acknowledges that its environmental stewardship in the past was very different from what it is today. During the last decade, Brookhaven has made great strides in cleaning up the environment and keeping it clean, and we work hard to be a good neighbor.” (From the Brookhaven website, Aug 4, 2008

Hi Gang!
So this is the reason we headed south for most of the month of August. We worked setting up for the Nationals, drove practice, sold shirts, pick-up and watched our friends compete.

Val got a 5th [Womens 6-11 Slalom] for her first visit to the Nat'ls. Included are stills and video from one of our friends who is also the local weather man.

Enjoy, Bob

Jerry Felice sends greetings from Ocala Florida

Greetings from Ocala, Florida. All is well down here in the sunshine and we are looking forward to the bitter temps. this coming winter. It may get down as low as 35 degrees in the dead of night.
Anyway, I thought I'd try to send a photo or two of myself and let you know what I've been up to lately. I retired from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue in 2005. I think 40 some odd years in the fire service is enough for me. We moved to Ocala recently to be almost exactly mid way between our son and daughter and their families. It is 91 miles to out son in Tampa and 99 miles to our daughter in St. Augustine.
About a year ago, I published a book. YUP, who da thunk?? I am receiving royalty checks on it as we speak. The name of the book is "It all started one day" and it is pretty much in the line of a biography of how I got involved in the fire service right up to my retirement.
I will try to send a photo of myself along with my youngest grandchillen. I say I will try because this damned Vista program has been giving me a hard time lately and don't know if it will go through.
Take care and stay safe and if anyone would like to holler at me, I can be reached at oldvamp@cox.net
Thanks, Jerry

Nadine Katz Bernstein says "Hello!"

Nadine (center) with her family on their annual vacation in Jamaica

Nadine and Herb moved last year to 15 Bank Street, Apt 115C, White Plains NY 10606 because we've built a wonderful home in Cary, North Carolina and will permanently relocate in 1-2 years. For now visiting periodically is fun. Still working full-time for Southern Westchester BOCES as a School Social Worker. Email remains the same Nayhb@optonline.net and I look forward to hearing from classmates who wish to correspond.
